A door that binds or rattles is annoying and unsafe. This guide covers checking the frame, fitting the door, getting the latch/strike right, and weatherproofing external doors.
Inspect the Frame
Ensure the frame is square and plumb. If the frame is warped, no door will fit well — fix or replace the frame first. Decide hand (left/right) and measure clearance required (typical gaps 2–4 mm).
Hang the Door
Position the door with shims at hinge locations. Attach the top hinge first, then check swing, then attach the bottom hinge. Use long screws into framing for strength, especially on external doors.
Latch & Strike Plate
Mark the latch position and chisel/rout a recess for flush fitting. Install the strike plate so the latch mates smoothly — test and fine-tune with a file if needed.
Weatherproofing (external doors)
Install threshold, sweep, and compressible weatherstripping. Check the door seals at multiple temperatures if possible — thermal movement can change clearances.
Common Errors
- Poorly shimmed frames causing binding.
- Using short screws in hinges (leads to sagging).
- Over-planing instead of fixing the frame.
Quick Tips
Use a router for precision recesses, keep a gap gauge handy, and always test open/close with locks installed.
